The Last Judgment by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, kept at Gallerie d’Italia, Palazzo Leoni Montanari, Vicenza, is a rare example of a completed sketch for the ceiling painting of a church or a chapel. In the centre of the painting is Jesus seated on a cloud, surrounded by trumpeting angels, some with the Instruments of the Passion. The bottom right-hand corner features resurrection of the righteous, with sinners and hellfire depicted on the left. Apparently Tiepolo himself never brought this sketch to life, which raises many doubts about its dating. It is dated to the early 1730s by some researchers and to ca. 1747 by others. The rich Hermitage collection of Tiepolo’s works lacks the ceiling paintings that brought fame to the Venetian artist and marked the climax of European mural painting. That is why the painting from Palazzo Leoni Montanari is of particular interest to the lovers of eighteenth-century Italian painting.
